Proclamation No. 1351-2024

Short Title The proclamation is formally cited as the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property Ratification Proclamation No. 1351/2024.

Issuing Organ The proclamation was issued by the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It was signed by Taye Atske Selassie, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Effective Date This law came into force on December 10, 2024, which was the date of its publication in the Federal Negarit Gazette.

Implementing Organ The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority is the government body responsible for the implementation of the convention.

Purpose and Scope The proclamation ratifies the 1883 Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, as revised in Stockholm in 1967 and amended in 1979. The objective is to provide a foundation for international standards for intellectual property rights, helping Ethiopian inventions, trademarks, and industrial designs receive protection abroad while preventing unfair competition.

Specific Reservations The proclamation specifies that Sub-Article (1) of Article 28 of the Convention will not be applicable in Ethiopia at this time, although the government may choose to apply it in the future.
